The History of Ceremonial Cacao
The cultivation and use of cacao is believed to have begun by the Olmec people of Mexico, dating back to approximately 1500 BC. The Olmecs undoubtedly passed their cacao knowledge on to the Mayans who not only consumed chocolate, they also revered it. They considered cacao to be the food from the Gods.
